This Heart of Mine (Whiskey Creek #8)

by

First love. Second chance?

As the daughter of a hoarder, Phoenix Fuller had a tough childhood. So when the handsome, popular Riley Stinson became her boyfriend in high school, she finally felt as though she had something to be proud of. Phoenix was desperate not to lose him—especially once she found out she was pregnant. Yes, she might have acted a bit obsessive when he broke up with her. But she did not run down the girl he started dating next!

Unfortunately, there was no way to prove her innocence. Now, after serving her time in prison, Phoenix has been released. All she wants to do is return to Whiskey Creek and get to know her son. But Jacob's father isn't exactly welcoming.

Riley doesn't trust Phoenix, doesn't want her in Jacob's life. He is, however, ready to find someone to love. And he wants a good mother for his son. He has no idea that he's about to find both—if they can forgive the mistakes in their past…

Phoenix went to jail at 18 years old for a crime she didn’t commit.

17 years later, she is out, and trying to start a relationship with the son she has never known.

Wow, this book was brutally wonderful. Hands down one on the best I have read in a very long time.

Being the daughter of a reclusive obese hoarder guaranteed Phoenix’s status as on outcast. But it didn't stop Riley, from falling in love with her. Unfortunately, family pressure caused Riley to break it off. Then the unthinkable happened. Phoenix, having lost her virginity to Riley, soon realized she was pregnant. She didn't know how to tell him, was scared and alone. Then Riley starts dating Lori, the daughter of a prominent family. One night a horrible accident caused by Phoenix’ s friend Penny lands Phoenix in prison for vehicular manslaughter, despite her please of innocence. Phoenix goes to prison for 17 years.

By this point in the book I was already hooked, but it just kept getting better. The story circles around Phoenix getting out of prison and trying to connect with a son she has never known. Jacob is 16 years old and has been raised by Riley. Jacob is such a sweet , pure boy and he just made my heart melt. He was so open to her affection and immediately believed in her innocence. Riley on the other hand, wished she would have stayed away and never come back to Whiskey Creek.

Phoenix is determined and strong, and as the reader you just want such good things for her. Even after all the years in prison, she is not bitter. She is kind and proud and is determined not to show any affection toward Riley for fear he will take it the wrong way and she might lose the chance to know her son. Even though he is the only man she has ever been with, and still holds a torch for him, she acts uninterested.

As the story progresses, Riley see’s that Phoenix is more than what he was told as a confused 18 year old boy. He sees her inner strength and begins to feel those old flames again. *Sigh
Riley confuses Phoenix when he makes advances, and she basically tells him
“ It's ok you didn't love me the way I loved you, I was young and didn’t know that’s what boys said to girls.” (Paraphrase)

“I’m sorry I hurt you.”

“At that age…”

“Don’t make excuses for me, I knew what love was, and I was in love with you.”

This is such a beautiful love story, but not only that, it is the story of a mother, a story of forgiveness, and a story of strength against adversity.
I absolutely could not put this book down. I wanted such good things for Phoenix, and for Riley for that matter. He fought such an internal battle, it made my heart hurt.

It was such a great HEA, that was even better for all the adversity.

The only question is will she keep it or feed it to the ones who want him dead?

This book was great! Finally after what seems to be an eternity we get some insight into Acheron's secrets and Kat's strange declaration of love in a past book. (Light bulb! It all makes sense!)

I have listened to the entire Dark Hunter/ Were Hunter series via Audiobooks and have enjoyed them immensely HOWEVER the new narrator left me feeling somewhat wanting.. I hope the next books are read by the previous narrator, he seemed to have that something extra that just makes all the difference!

Night Chills by Dean Koontz

Night Chills

Designed by top scientists and unleashed in a monstrous conspiracy, night chills are seizing the men and women of Black River--driving them to acts of rape and murder. The nightmare is real. And death is the only cure...

My Review

I liked this book, but it was definitely not my favorite Dean Koontz Read. This book was revamped from an earlier edition from around the 70's and is about subliminal advertising used as a form of mind control.

Three people get together to coordinate an experiment on an isolated town where the small population is subjected to the experiment. If the experiment works, they could become extremely famous and rich. The experiments cause flu symptoms and "night chills" (get it?). The inhabitants do fight back and there are some intense sex scenes in this one

Burning Up Flint (Cyborg Seduction #1)

Mira won't share her cyborg and she belongs to no one-not even to a man who has captured her heart. She doesn't know if cyborgs feel... anything. Can Flint love her? Mira is determined to find out, no matter how much trouble she makes for the big guy.

I wanted to love this book. I feel like it had alot of potential. I love Laurann Dohner, and in all of her other Series there is an Alpha Male that finds love for the female but this.... this did not deliver the "Love" aspect that I needed to find this book pleasurable. *Sigh

I have read other reviews that this is not necessarily a trend in the series, so I will read the next in the series to see. However, I don't really know what I was expecting... they are cyborgs lol

My Review

this was was so-so for me.It was lacking the excitement i was looking for. Something about FORCED mating rubs me wrong, even though the author tries to make it out like the Kayla has a choice in the matter, She doesn't. Not really, not when it is stated up front she will probably die if she doesn't mate before the full moon.. Hurmph

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something... unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK!

The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden (The Coincidence #1)

From the bestselling author of The Secret of Ella and Michacomes a mesmerizing novel of fate, friendship, and the healing power of love . . .

THE COINCIDENCE OF CALLIE
KAYDEN

When fate lands Kayden and Callie at the same college, Kayden is determined to get to know the beautiful girl who changed his destiny. And the more he tries to be a part of her life, the more he realizes that, this time, it's Callie who needs to be saved...

I am sitting at my desk blinking at the ending of this book. I have very mixed emotions, this book was a roller coaster ride. I have not decided my feelings. It was depressing, like really depressing... I may have to reevaluate.. maybe give it some time before I decide how I really feel.

The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden is definetly not a quick easy read and it does NOT leave you feeling good inside O_o

Stygian's Honor (Breeds #27) by Lora Leigh

Stygian's Honor (Breeds #27)

4.07 of 5 stars
Window Rock, Arizona, is the last known location of Honor Roberts, who vanished when she was just thirteen. It was her only sanctuary from the Breed research that would surely have ended in her death—one such insidious experiment should, indeed, have killed her. That she lived is both a miracle—and a great mystery.

Stygian’s mission is to find Honor Roberts, no matter the cost. Now, with the help of Liza Johnson, assistant to the chief of the Navajo Nation, he is closer than ever to his goal. But will the discovery of Honor Roberts mean the destruction of the mating heat that has developed between Stygian and Liza?

Jul 10, 2014

Our H/h are Sygian and Liza. Liza is a mentally and physically strong character. She doesn't allow people to push her around. Her interaction with Breeds is amusing. When they "Mate" she has a meltdown and the typical response of DENIAL!
The steamy sex scenes are great as always.
** Something to mention, Lora Leigh adds random details to her stories and tries to slip them by the reader, and perhaps if I had not read 27 previous books maybe I wouldn't have noticed. BUT it is slightly infuriating when major parts of history are changed to suit the current book being written. EX: Weapons are illegal now? interesting

Nash (Marked Men #4)

Will their past determine their future?

Saint Ford has worked hard to achieve her childhood dream of becoming of nurse. Focused on her work and devoted to her patients, there’s no room for love. She doesn’t need a guy making waves in her calm, serene life—especially when he’s the unforgettable hottie who nearly destroyed her in high school. Dark, brooding Nash Donovan might not remember her or the terrible pain he caused. But he turned her world upside down... and now he’s trying to do it again.

Saint has no idea that Nash isn’t the cocky player he once was. Uncovering a devastating family secret has rocked his world, and now he’s struggling to figure out his future. He can’t be distracted by the pretty nurse he seems to meet everywhere. Still, he can’t ignore the sparks that fly between them —or how she seems so desperate to get away from him. But the funny, sweet, and drop-dead gorgeous Saint is far too amazing to give up on—especially since she’s the only thing in his life that seems to make sense.

When Nash discovers the truth about their past, he realizes he may have lost her heart before he could even fight for it. Now, Saint has to decide: is Nash worth risking herself for all over again?

This book was Sad... ALOT..
Poor Nash was so beaten down what with finding out about his dad in the last book. *sigh
Saint was a godsend for him, even after their somewhat sordid past. She went to high school with all the guys but she remembered him as a handsome cruel boy. And that REALLY messed with her head. They had ALOT of sh*t to work out. Saint tried to resist the longstanding crush she had on Nash, but inevitably caves.
It was great to see her walls come down and I enjoyed this one.

Cant wait for ASA's book!

Dangerously Happy by Varian Krylov

Dangerously Happy

creating innovative music that makes his soul sing, he settled for a degree in software, a job in a cubicle, and a spot in a generic band with his buddies.

And he's always been straight. But when he's seduced by magnetic local literary luminary Dario, Aidan must decide whether to keep playing it safe, or succumb to a ravenous passion and a nourishing love unlike anything he's experienced before. Will he find the courage to go after real happiness if it means admitting he's in love with a man?

Their journey together isn't easy. Sometimes it isn't safe. Even if Aidan has the courage to admit he's in love with Dario, can he endure the repercussions of the traumatic event in Dario's past?

This novel has mature content and is intended for readers over the age of eighteen. Although this is a story about two men falling in love, there are extended, explicit sex scenes, including some BDSM, m/m/m and m/m/f scenes. There are references to sexual violence which may be a trigger for some readers, although there is no graphic depiction of rape in the book.

♥

Great book. I enjoy M/M books that don't focus on how awful discovery and coming out can be. I know it can be terrible, but I don't necessarily want to read how awful people can be, I want to pretend that is not the case. This was a great read for me.

Rowdy (Marked Men #5) by Jay Crownover

Rowdy (Marked Men #5)

After the only girl he ever loved told him that he would never be enough, Rowdy St. James knocked the Texas dust off his boots and set out to live up to his nickname. A good ol’ boy looking for good times and good friends, Rowdy refuses to take anything too seriously, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. Burned by love once, he isn’t going to let himself trust a woman again. But that’s before his new co-worker arrives, a ghost from the past who’s suddenly making him question every lesson he ever learned.

Salem Cruz grew up in house with too many rules and too little fun—a world of unhappiness she couldn't wait to forget. But one nice thing from childhood has stayed with her; the memory of the sweet, blue-eyed boy next door who’d been head over heels in love with her little sister.

Now, fate and an old friend have brought her and Rowdy together, and Salem is determined to show him that once upon a time he picked the wrong sister. A mission that is working perfectly—until the one person that ties them together appears, threatening to tear them apart for good.

Really enjoyed Rowdy! I loved Salem, they were a great match and I just loved her personality and style. She just popped right out of the book for me! I especially loved the parts of the book about their childhood together and drawing he made for her that she put made into a tattoo years later *Sigh

Abduction by Varian Krylov

Abduction

For years, college student Devan Astor has penned erotic stories based on her dark fantasies, but when she's abducted, she is faced with the real terror of being at the mercy of a cruel stranger. She flees, but in the remote cabin where she takes refuge, will she encounter a danger even more frightening than the kidnapper who is still hunting her? At the end of her ordeal, will she be left scarred by the experiences that so closely match her own fantasies, or will she discover fulfillment she never imagined?

I have a lot of feelings about this book. Mostly disturbed would be the primary emotion I feel. At times the book was good, but for the most part,I just felt extremely uncomfortable. There is a line that crosses from sexually erotic into morbidly creepy and that is where this book led me into. I wish I would have never started to read this book.

A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark #2)

Acclaimed author Kresley Cole introduces a sizzling new series with this tale of a fierce werewolf and a bewitching vampire—unlikely soul mates whose passion will test the boundaries of life and death.

A mythic warrior who'll stop at nothing to possess her...

After enduring years of torture from the vampire horde, Lachlain MacRieve, leader of the Lykae Clan, is enraged to find the predestined mate he's waited millennia for is a vampire. Or partly one. This Emmaline is a small, ethereal half Valkyrie/half vampire, who somehow begins to soothe the fury burning within him.

A vampire captured by her wildest fantasy...

Sheltered Emmaline Troy finally sets out to uncover the truth about her deceased parents—until a powerful Lykae claims her as his mate and forces her back to his ancestral Scottish castle. There, her fear of the Lykae—and their notorious dark desires—ebbs as he begins a slow, wicked seduction to sate her own dark cravings.

An all-consuming desire...

Yet when an ancient evil from her past resurfaces, will their desire deepen into a love that can bring a proud warrior to his knees and turn a gentle beauty into the fighter she was born to be?

In the beginning of this book I was questioning whether or not I would like the heroine because she seemed very weak and timid. Thankfully I learned not too far into the book that she was part vampire part Valkyrie and through hard trials throughout the book she became stronger and more self reliant and you have to like a girl for that. I really enjoyed this book the h & H we're a great match and I absolutely loved the world that kresley Cole has created and I cannot wait to read more in this series ! I have already begun the next book and I've already got the next 4 audiobooks waiting patiently in my queue!

Gabriel's Mate (Scanguards Vampires #3) by Tina Folsom

Gabriel's Mate (Scanguards Vampires #3)

After Maya is turned into a vampire against her will, vampire and Scanguards bodyguard Gabriel is charged with protecting her and finding her attacker.

Gabriel has never guarded a body as perfect as Maya’s. But while the sexual tension between them rises and the rogue vampire closes in on them, Gabriel can’t allow himself to give into the desire he feels for Maya. He fears to fully show himself to her despite the intimacies they share - afraid she will react like all other women when she discovers the horror he hides.

Will she run from him when she discovers his secret, calling him a monster, a freak, a creature not worthy of her love?

Caution: graphic and explicit sex scenes - not for the faint of heart.

I really enjoyed this one, just like I did with the previous two of the series. I was somewhat intrigued by the double package *wink wink

This story revolves around Gabriel and Maya. Instead of going back to NY City he stays in the city, and she is attacked. Eddie rescued her and brings her to Samson's place. Gabriel and crew are asked to help Maya finish turning (intriguing to say the least) and catch the rogue Vamp that left her to die/turn alone. Of course Gabriel is immediately drawn to her.

This book was pretty good. I felt at time it was somewhat obvious what was happening, but these sexy warriors couldn't take off their rose colored glasses. Altogether though, It was an enjoyable read.
